Just thinking. TV sitcoms, comedians, comedy writers, most of them are crap. The reason everyone is a comedian these days is because the bar for what is funny is so low that anyone can jump it. The majority of humor is is not particularly clever, just dirty talk or other situational discomfort. Self-degradation, humiliation, andĀ embarrassment don’t constitute grand forms of humor. Since when is laughing at another to hide your own shortcomings marketable? Since a while ago, I guess. But certainly it is valid to question why something is regarded as humor. Incongruities can be humorous. But is schadenfreude really humor? Pleasurable and satisfying, maybe. But funny? How can a society work together towards anything when the common humor is to set yourself above those around you? The spirit of competition is so ingrained in everyday life that it has tainted humor that is intended to enhance mental stability and well-being. Humor should be a chance for people to connect emotionally for the good, not a chance to bury them. And I’m perfectly guilty. I smile and cheer vindictively when someone gets what I think they deserve. I’ve laughed at others when they get outwitted, mocked, and put down.

What’s the matter with me? Some of those people I’ve claimed to be friends. What kind of friend am I?
